New Book

Purushaveshangal, a collection of essays on Mammootty and Mohanlal will be released by the end of this month. I have edited the book which seeks to analyse the socio-political implications of stardom in Malayalam cinema. The reigning superstars continue to keep the flag flying for the Malayalam film industry. The onslaught of television and the invasion of young heroes have not yet relegated the uncrowned kings to a slot where their charisma works no more. Both veterans have completed their silver jubilee in Malayalam films. They have been the two great icons of Malayalam cinema for the past two decades. They were the first real superstars of a State where hero worship is treated with contempt. The kind of sway that Mammootty and Mohanlal have over Malayalam speaking audience worldwide for the past 25 years has been phenomenal.
In terms of acting calibre, they are as good as the best in the world. And as far as Kerala's 652-km length box-office was concerned, they have a fantastic draw. Seven out of 10 all time super hit films in Malayalam featured either one of them. No genuine actor, however, has broken into the ranks of stars in Malayalam films after Mammootty and Mohanlal.
Published by Fabien Books Alappuzha, the book features articles by Filippo Osella and Caroline Osella, Maythil Radhakrishnan, Viju.V Nair, Kalpetta Narayanan, E.P Rajagopalan, C.S Venkiteswaran, P.S Radhakrishnan, Dr.K Gopinadhan, Dr.Miniprasad and Geetha.

Veettilekkulla Kathukal

Veettilekkulla Kathukal offers a deep look at the unseen side of Sylvia Plath, American writer whose best-known poems are noted for their personal imagery and intense focus. It is an attempt to probe the troubled mind of the celebrated writer. From college years to her death in February 1963, Sylvia Plath wrote 696 letters to her family. A selection of these letters were collected together by her mother Aurelia Schobber Plath who added her own commentary to produce the volume, Letters Home. Veettilekkulla Kathukal is based on this book and some of her biographies.

Modern Classics

The book titled Sahasrabdathinte cinemakal, was released by film critic C.S Venkiteswaran at the Open Forum held as part of the 10th International Film Festival of Kerala held from 9 to 16th December 2005. Critic I Shanmughadas received the copy. Dr V.C Haris, moderater at the function introduced the book. Published by Frame Film Society Tirur, the book is an attempt to popularise contemporary world cinema among the film literate audience in Kerala. The book features frame by frame study of three modern classics- Run Lola Run,Gloomy Sunday and Good Bye Lenin. These films were screened at various editions of International Film festivals held in Kerala. I just want to give the filmbuffs a better appreciation for these widely acclaimed films. The book seeks to provide insights into even a minor scene or specific line of dialogue that can be vitally important to the dynamic of the film. The film lovers might have missed the minor details and subtle use of thematic symbols during the screening at the film festival. (I used to watch at least four films a day during the festival.) If you watch these films again after reading this book, you may find tremendous new meanings that are at best translated into images. Both aspiring screenwriters and beginners may find many helpful tips in this book.
